Hilda Lam, M.Mus.

June 1, 2020 By

Hilda Lam voice lessonsRenowned for her vibrant tone and colourful vocal palette, Hilda is an avid performer in opera and musical theatre. Rooted in the passion for musical arts and theatre, Hilda began her vocal journey at a young age studying privately with soprano and vocal pedagogue Cindy Leung. She continued her vocal training at the University of Alberta (Augustana campus) under the tutelage of Kathleen Corcoran and Harold Wiens. After earning her B.Mus degree in vocal performance, Hilda continued to complete her Masters degree in vocal performance at the University of Western Ontario with Canadian soprano, Jackalyn Short. In 2017, Hilda received the Wirth Institute of Austrian and Central European Studies Vocal Scholarship to attend the German Lieder performance program at the Franz Schubert Institute in Austria, where she worked with international master teachers and coaches such as, Elly Ameling, Robert Holl, and Deen Larsen. Hilda is also an alumna of Opera NUOVA.

Teaching:

Hilda has many years of teaching experience working with children, teens, and adults. She teaches classical, musical theatre, and pop repertoire, and focuses on vocal techniques such as breathing, voice placements, and diction. Hilda has also prepared students for RCM graded exams and music festivals, where many of her students have attained top results. Her teaching journey has also expanded abroad to China, where she taught single and group sessions at the Shanghai Children Arts Theatre covering subjects on vocal technique, musicianship skills, music theory, and music history. She is fluent in multiple languages, including English, Mandarin, and Cantonese.

Teaching Philosophy and Mission:

I strongly believe in Koldáy’s idea to “teach music and singing at school in such a way that it is not a torture but a joy for the pupil; instill a thirst for finer music in them, a thirst which will last for a lifetime”. With local and international teaching experiences, I have developed a S.I.N.G approach that encourages students to find their own voice and artist from within.

  • Stimulate students’ musical interests
  • Inspire artistic creativity and freedom
  • Navigate students through healthy technical habits and musicianship skills
  • Generate a natural transformation and balance in technique and artistry

My mission is to create a safe, fun, and inclusive environment that allows everyone to experience an infinite passion and enjoyment of music-making.
