ysis, Counterpoint

Christopher Ludwig is a Vancouver based composer, theory specilist and flute player. He hold Bachelor degrees in Music and in Education, as well as a Masters degree in Composition from the University of British Columbia. Some of Ludwig’s teachers include Canadian composers Stephen Chatman, Larry Nickel and Robert Pritchard.

Since 1998, Ludwig has completed over 90 works, nearly all of which are for acoustic instruments and ensembles. His recording of keyboard works has been described by Carol Greenly of Con Brio Recordings as an “…uninhibited, unique CD of contemporary piano solos.”

Ludwig is a keen composer of art song, frequently setting his own poetry. He was recently commissioned by Baritone Cliff Ridley to compose a continuous setting of Vancouver Island poet Ken Cather’s book entitled Outward Voyage. A recording comprised of Ludwig’s art songs entitled Outward Voyage was released in 2009.

In addition, Ludwig has been involved in many recordings projects including Expressivity (2007): a recording of his keyboard works by Canadian pianists Jane Hayes, Anna Levy and Danielle Marcinek and The Road to Paradise (1998).

Ludwig was also commissioned by Dancestreams (a Vancouver Island dance company) to compose chamber music for choreography at the Banff Centre for the Performing Arts and in Halifax, Nova Scotia. As part of this project, he worked with choreographers from the Yukon, Manitoba, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland.

In his early years, Ludwig was a high school band and choir teacher, and as such, many of his compositions have been written for, or were commissioned by various high school student ensembles including choirs and youth orchestras.

His most recent publications include four volumes of flute duets entitled Discourse for two flutes (2003), and two works for flute and piano by the Avondale Press (2007). Ludwig is also a dedicated poet and has set many of his works to music. His poems have also been published in different periodicals.

Mr. Ludwig is happy to join World of Music and Arts as a theory specialist in Rudiments, Music History, Harmony, Counterpoint and Analysis as well as Composition.
