Music History studies composers, their compositions and times where they lived and created their masterpieces. It is important for every performer to enrich themselves with musical understanding that goes beyond learning the notes. Royal Conservatoire of Music offers students 3 levels or grades of Music History in addition to practical examination:
Music History 1: Overview
Music History 2: Middle Ages to 1800
Music History 3: from 1800 to Modern Music
Students will be tested in the following areas: exact dates of birth and death of composers; dates of important compositions; dates of musical time periods; important musical characteristics of composers, their compositions and time periods; people and places associated with composers; in-depth knowledge of musical terminology; writing an essay about composer’s life and musical style; in-depth analysis (essay style) of important musical compositions; reading the score (musical notes).
It is recommended to have 45 min. or 60 min. weekly lessons. During the week student should spend 3-5 hours regularly memorizing musical facts and listening to required music examples.
Usually our students take 3 to 6 month to prepare for each history exam.

Christopher Ludwig, M.Mus.
Christopher Ludwig is a Vancouver based composer, theory specilist and flute player. He hold Bachelor degrees in Music and in Education, as well as a Masters degree in Composition from the University of British Columbia. Some of Ludwig’s teachers include Canadian composers Stephen Chatman, Larry Nickel and Robert Pritchard.

Gloria Yu, B. Mus., M.Mus. Gloria continues her musical studies in Vancouver and Alberta and earned her B. Mus. from the University of Lethbridge and M. Mus. from Must University, specializing in Piano Performance. While studying at the University of Lethbridge Gloria won the first award of the classical piano open competition of the Lethbridge Kiwanis Festival 2003. She also participated at the piano master class with Glen Montgomery and the vocal master class with Richard Miller in 2004. Gloria is an early childhood music educator as well. She received the Certificate of Teaching from the Associated Board of Royal Schools of Music from London. Gloria is also a Certified Kindermusik, Kelly Kirby Method and Music for Young Children teacher. |
